Location

The North East Link (NEL) is the Victorian Government’s largest infrastructure investment in Melbourne’s north-east, designed to transform the city’s transport network. The project includes a 6.5km tunnel from Watsonia to Bulleen, filling a crucial gap in Melbourne’s freeway system, removing 15,000 trucks off local roads daily, and reducing travel times by up to 35 minutes. Key upgrades to the Eastern Freeway and M80 Ring Road will introduce new lanes, smart technology, and a seamless connection to the North East Link tunnels.

In addition to the freeway upgrades, the scope at Bulleen Interchange includes; hardstand construction, super T bridge structures, steel flyovers, construction of pedestrian bridges and underpasses, utility relocations and development of shared user paths to support walking and cycling. Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) will be integrated to improve traffic management, while noise walls and floodwalls will be installed to protect surrounding areas. Landscaping and tree planting will also enhance the environmental and aesthetic value of the project area.
